DSRCO supports the City's Rental Registry amendment.
The City needs a better way to track Absentee Landlords than
chasing through property tax records. When problems occur,
it would be much easier to consult a current database than
have to follow a paper trail through a string of deed filings
and "last known addresses."

Of course there are more provisions in the amendment that
are equally as important.

What your Neighbors are saying:

Re: Recycling Your Old Computer
Goodwill has a store on Freedom Drive that will take anything computer related, working or non-working, regardless of the age or condition. I think they use them for parts. Just call and they will tell you how to donate. They also accept old programs that won't run on the newer computers. The number is listed under Goodwill Computer Store in the phone book. You don't get any money, but at least it will be used instead of going to a landfill.

New City Deal for the BobCats?
When the (Charlotte Observer) story about Johnson’s “suffering” appeared several months ago, my conclusion was that, within 12 months, he would ask for help from the city/county, not knowing of course, what form it might take. Now here’s my current prediction: Bobcats For Sale --- Make an Offer, any offer!Bob Johnson will concoct a scheme to sell the Bobcats to Michael Jordan, with city participation, of course----maybe a joint ownership, sharing the profits, etc.

The story will be that this arrangement will keep the Bobcats here forever and prevent a sale to someone who might move them to another city!! Sort of a godfather proposition, and with the participation of the famous Michael Jordan, along with one of Prof. John Connaughton’s famous economic impact studies, there will be plenty of votes on city/county elected bodies to approve it.

Internet Hoax / Urban Legend

An e-mail recently began circulating warning drivers that “carjackers” are placing flyers or other pieces of paper on the rear windows of automobiles and stealing the vehicle when the driver gets out to remove the paper. This is an internet/e-mail urban legend that first appeared in February 2004. For additional information about this and other urban legends see: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/carjack.asp

Reader Speaks Out
Will City Re-Classify Goats as Pets?

I am writing to make you aware of a proposed amendment to the City Code that will change the definition of “pet” that currently includes cats, dogs, and other household domestic animals to include pygmy goats.

This proposed amendment will be on the City Council agenda for their June 8th meeting, 7 pm at the Government Center and, if passed will have a significant impact on the quality of life in our city.

Currently, pygmy goats are considered livestock and require all the special attention, restrictions, and inspections of full-sized goats, cows, sheep, and other variations of livestock. If passed, pygmy goats could be introduced into your residential area
without the restrictions and requirements required for other livestock.

Why should you care if pygmy goats are considered pets instead of livestock in the City of Charlotte? If treated as pets, pygmy goats become:

1. A clear public nuisance with 24-hour noise, odor, and unreasonable health risks.

2. Victims of animal cruelty even by well-intended owners.

3. A legal precedent for a flood of additional livestock types to be allowed into your neighborhood without restriction, including potbelly pigs, sheep, and burros.

Please consider voicing your opinion regarding this issue to Charlotte City Council members before their meeting on June 8.

If you can, join us on June 8 at the City Council meeting. We would appreciate your support in our efforts to stop this amendment before it affects your neighborhood as well as ours! ---- Lanny and Fay Skidmore

===============================

Of particular importance, if your HOA regulations do not define specifically what pets are permitted, the City Ordinance applies and a neighbor who loves Goats (or hates his neighbors) could bring them in. Don't know about you, but I have spent some time on a working farm and had occasion to catch a goat or two by hand. Ewwwwwwwwwwwww! In fact, my next door my neighbor "rented" three full size goats one summer to help him contend with an overgrown honeysuckle problem. Kept them for three weeks, but couldn't cope with the smell (I mean really, really serious body odor) when the wind shifted in his direction. --- Bernie Samonds, President, DSRCO

Your Questions and Some Answers

Q. I went to Derita Presbyterian last Thursday, but no one was there. Who do I need to see to get help with a neighborhood problem.

Sorry, the Board adopted Summer Hours. It will meet June 18th and again on August 20th, 7pm as usual. Most neighborhood problems can be resolved with a phone call to 311 or by contacting your CMPD Community Coordinators.

DSRCO does get a lot of phone calls (704 806-3813), but the majority of our requests come in by email. As we attempt to work out solutions for folks, we try to share information that we have learned in the Newsletter . . . usually the resolutions that we feel would be helpful to the most people. Ouite often it's simply a matter of forwarding your email to the correct person. Our email address is deritarep@aol.com
=========================================================

Q. How much do you charge to announce a Church fund-raiser in your newsletter? I'm in charge of advertising for a BBQ this Fall?

Two plates and three sandwiches!!

No, seriously, posting Community Events here is FREE. Sharing that type of news is an important part of this newsletter and a big part of what DSRCO does to encourage the spirit of Community among our neighborhoods.

A few days prior to each newsletter, we contact local pastors, church secretaries, and others to ask for info on upcoming special services, programs, events, and fund raisers . . . but we would certainly like to hear from you even a week or two before your event.

Our Newsletter goes out to 3250+ addresses each issue, and folks who plan ahead often have their event listed in the two newsletters prior to their event. Double the exposure and possibly increase your turnout. Again, our email
address is deritarep@aol.com We prefer a text email, rather than a pdf flyer. Word Doc. is unacceptable.

Q. I was riding along Sugar Creek Rd. last night in the Derita area and noticed the flags that are hanging on the flag poles along the side of the street and worn and faded. Who is responsible for replacing them? They could be very welcoming when you drive into Derita area, but the shape they are currently in, is not very eye pleasing. --- Ms. Johnson
===========================================

Q. PLEASE can we do something about our American flags along Sugar Creek Rd., they are a disgrace to our community and country. Thank You --- Bill Schoonmaker

Thanks for your concern.

The American Flags are a continuing project of Derita American Legion Post 345, The original flags, poles and holders were purchased some years ago to be displayed prominently on public holidays. An arrangement was made with
BellSouth, which allows the Legionnaires to use their utility poles.

It so happened that they were on display when the 9-11 attacks occurred, and a decision was made not to remove them. . . Since that time, I know that the Legion Post has replaced the original flags with new ones at least three times.They have also replaced the poles with a newer model that prevents the flags from wrapping themselves tightly around the pole.

Not long ago, the Legionnaires purchased another supply of new flags, but due to the failing health of these veterans, they have been unable to climb the ladder & change the flags themselves.

Earlier, we suggested that a local Boy Scout Troop might be willing to undertake this as a Community Service Project, but we were told that the Legion's Waiver of Liability with BellSouth prevents that. We also suggested that either City workers or BellSouth linemen might be willing to volunteer, but so far nothing has come of that idea.

We also suggested a fund-raising campaign to replace the flags with new, but were told that it is not a question of money, but of manpower. (Rental fees from the Legion Building have paid for the all the previous flags.)

We will contact them again to see if something can be worked out

Q. This is Terry Lewis from Allen Hills in Derita, back in the good ol' days. I haven't lived there for years, but I am still a frequent visitor to Nevin Road as my parents are still living in the old homeplace. I actually was there the other day and brought up one of my favorite memories as a kid, that being The Derita Reporter!

My mom told me she thought you had a website where I might could contact you. I played Little League at Allen Hills park back in 1972 or 73, the final year that Little League was played there before they moved to Cheshire Ballfield and started the "new" Bronco & Pony leagues.

Now to my question, do you still have copies of The Derita Reporter for years 71 thru 76 involving baseball. I know today everyone puts things on disk, but I wasn't sure how or if anything was kept from that long ago. I would love to Re-Live those days, and thought the only way it might be possible was The Derita Reporter. Would you please let me know if these issues are still available & if so how I could obtain them.

I appreciate you taking my email & I appreciate you doing what you did for us kids thru your reporting in The Derita Reporter!
--- Terry Lewis, Harrisburg, NC

Thanks, Terry. You'd be surprised how often I get this question. I'm happy to report that almost every issue of The Derita Reporter sold out. Only problem was that the advertising and subscription revenues back then rarely covered the
mailing & production costs. We published off and on from 1974-1982.

Now for the Good News. I recently started going through our last remaining file copies and plan to start posting them on-line, every page from each issue, at webshots.com. You'll be able to click on a thumbnail of the issue cover,
see thumbnails of each page, then click "actual size" (which actually gives you a larger-sized text for easy reading. We will definitely spread the word when that webpage is up and running.

Meanwhile, we invite you to visit our Derita Reporter photo archive. http://community.webshots.com/user/DeritaReporterArchive We started posting some pics from our darkroom negatives back in November and we have been amazed at the response. Over 25,400 views. Mostly we have
posted some 1970-80's Allen Hills Pool stuff & some North High sports items, but last week we added some Derita sports photos. A little bit short on identifying who everyone was, but this is the first time some these negatives have ever been printed. We always shot a lot more photos than the newspaper could afford to print.

You'll also find thousands of our Derita Boy Scouting photos (by decade, 1960 - 2000) beginning with
http://community.webshots.com/user/60sDeritaScouts
==========================================================

Q. I saw the note about Newell Farmers Market (Opens June 13th) in your last issue, and I know you publicized the Vegetable available at Keziah's Furniture last summer --- I'm not working right now, so I've planted a large garden in hopes that I can sell some of my home-grown excess. Would you will willing to help?

After a winter of $2.59-3.50 lb. bland tomatoes at Food Lion this winter, we're hoping to find some home-grown veggies here in the Derita area. Can't finance a Farmers' Market for you like the Newell folks. but how about a FREE LISTING
--- a space to post your Name, Phone, Neighborhood, and Veggies coming in. We'll run it in the Newsletter, the Bargains Galore email on Wednesday, and in the Friday Funny Mail. That should help you clear out the excess.
Email us at deritarep@aol.com
===========================================================

Q. My husband and I are upset seeing the number of vacant houses with high weeds and uncut grass. Some lawns looked like they haven't been touched since last summer. What can we do to get these yards cleaned up?

Call 311 and ask for Code Enforcement. Make sure you can tell them the street name & house number. It's not always a quick fix, because Code may have to follow a paper trail to locate the actual owner of the property. Time is usually given for the owner to get the grass cut, or further action will be taken. In extreme cases, the City will have the yard cut and the owner billed.

Two things ---

#1) Additional Calls from other neighbors about the same address will stress your concern to the Code Staff, which will be stretched pretty thin this summer.

#2) This is for grass & weeds in excess of 12" high, not because your neighbor doesn't cut his lawn as often as you do and you think it makes your yard look bad. ==========================================================

Q. Has anything further been done about fencing for houses that back up to the Cindy Lane Extension? I read what the City Manager wrote in your newsletter, but he was definitely mis-informed by his Staff on several counts.

#1.) The juniper and ground cover that he says the city planted --- has still not be done.

#2.) We did not turn down backyard fencing, we requested it. Our CMPD Officers have agreed that a 4 or 5 ft. fence would help stop people from cutting through our yards and would deter crime.

We are aware of the City's budget crisis. Right now, we would settle for just the promise that the City will eventually provide this minor relief for us from the problem created by opening this street.

Councilman Mitchell, are you hearing these folks?
============================================================

Q.. How can I get my business card posted in the DSRCO Newsletter?

A small number of advertising spaces are available @$15.00 per month to help us offset our internet expenses (some restriction apply). The one fee covers insertion in the two Newsletters, the Wednesday Bargains Galore mails, and in Bernie's Friday Morning Funny emails.
For more info, call: 704 806-3813 (Leave a Message with your phone number).
===========================================================

Q. What is being built on the corner of West Sugar Creek Rd & Mineral Springs Roads?

Walgreen's Drugstore. Broke ground in May and usually takes 8 months until the opening, says their Contractor. Site prep is being done by Hal Abernethy LLC, a well known business based here in Derita. Two smaller shops, more to the Mineral Springs Rd. side of the property will be delayed until after the Graham Street Connector is finished, due to right-of-way uncertainties.
===========================================================

Q. What is the web link for your Bargains Galore webpage? I have done a Google Search and still can't find it.

Bargains Galore is a weekly email, not a website. We try to send out a listing of new stuff each Wednesday, deleting items that are two weeks old. You can list up to 8 items each week.

It's totally FREE! We do not charge to post an item. We do not collect any commission on anything sold. Transactions are between the buyer & seller only. Photos should be .jpg or .bmp

We had a website originally, but dropped it. Too many people from other parts of the country wanted to use it. This is LOCAL FOLKS buying, selling, & trading stuff with LOCAL PEOPLE.

As one Derita eBay seller told me, he can actually sell for less with Bargains Galore because there are NO Commissions and No Shipping involved. His customers like it because they can actually see what's being offered (and may be able to make an even better deal).

To receive the FREE mailing, email us: deritarep@aol.com Put Bargains Galore in the subject line.

The Old German Shepherd

One day an old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch. The old German Shepherd thinks, 'Oh, oh! I'm in deep doody now!' Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, 'Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder, if there are any more around here?' Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. 'Whew!' says the leopard, 'That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!' Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard.. So, off he goes, but the old German Shepherd sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine! Now, the old German Shepherd sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, 'What am I going to do now?', but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says... 'Where's that darn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!" Moral of this story: Don't mess with the old dogs; age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery! "BS" and brilliance only come with age and experience. --- submitted by Les Hunter
